Medina Azahara is an archaeological site located on the outskirts of Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain. It was built during the 10th century as a palace-city by the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba. The construction of the city was ordered by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III , who wanted to create a new capital that would rival the splendor of Baghdad and Constantinople. The city was built on a plateau overlooking the Guadalquivir River and was designed to be an impressive display of Islamic art and architecture. It featured magnificent palaces, courtyards, gardens, mosques, and administrative buildings. The city was also home to tens of thousands of inhabitants, including officials, artisans, and servants. Despite its grandeur, the city's life was relatively short-lived. It was sacked and destroyed in 1010 by Berber troops who had been hired by a rival caliph. Abd al-Rahman III was a prominent Muslim ruler who was the emir (leader) of the Umayyad caliphate in Spain from 912 to 929 and the caliph from 929 to 961. He is considered to be one of the most important and influential rulers in the history of al-Andalus, the Islamic state that existed in Spain from the 8th to the 15th century. Abd al-Rahman III was born in Cordoba , Spain in 891, and was the grandson of the previous Umayyad emir of al-Andalus. He came to power at the age of 21 after his father was assassinated, and he quickly consolidated his rule over the various factions and provinces of al-Andalus.
