Umayyad Caliphate

The Umayyad Caliphate was an Islamic empire that ruled from 661 to 750 CE. The caliphate was established by Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, a prominent companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the governor of Syria, following a power struggle with Ali, the fourth caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate . The Umayyad Caliphate was based in Damascus and expanded rapidly, conquering large parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. The Umayyads were known for their military prowess and their promotion of Arab culture and language. They also oversaw the construction of many grand buildings, including the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The Umayyads were controversial among some Muslims, as they were seen as being more concerned with worldly power and luxury than with upholding Islamic principles.
