Medina Azahara is an archaeological site located on the outskirts of Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain. It was built during the 10th century as a palace-city by the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba. The construction of the city was ordered by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III , who wanted to create a new capital that would rival the splendor of Baghdad and Constantinople. The city was built on a plateau overlooking the Guadalquivir River and was designed to be an impressive display of Islamic art and architecture. It featured magnificent palaces, courtyards, gardens, mosques, and administrative buildings. The city was also home to tens of thousands of inhabitants, including officials, artisans, and servants. Despite its grandeur, the city's life was relatively short-lived. It was sacked and destroyed in 1010 by Berber troops who had been hired by a rival caliph.
